DofE First Aid and Emergency Procedures

šŸ˜ šŸ’Ŗ In tonights Duke of Edinburgh Award session the group started looking at first aid & emergency procedures.

šŸŒ„ We looked at some likely vs unlikely first aid situation that might occur on expedition, how to help prevent them and what to do if a member of the group faces one of those situations. These included things like blisters, getting lost, dehydration, food poisoning, hypothermia, sprain or possible broken leg, sun burn, hot water burn, and drowning.

šŸž We used scenario cards to discuss how we would deal with certain situations that might occur whilst on expedition.

ā‰ļø Finally the group had to sort emergency procedure cards based on an emergency situation in open moorland, in bad weather and with no shelter or phone signal.

āœ”All of this helps participants to prepare for their expedition, taking into consideration things such as appropriate clothing, survival and first aid kits and everyday essentials like food and water. Knowing what to do in an emergency is essential DofE training but also very important in everyday life.

Over the next few sessions we will be covering more first aid such as how to treat someone using bandages, slings and splints. We will also be learning CPR šŸ„

šŸ Before the light faded at the start of the session the group got outside into the fresh air for a few games of rounders to work towards their physical section.
